Lost in the Timeless Allure of Sambhar Lake: A Scenic Retreat

Nestled amidst Rajasthan's lesser-known treasures, Sambhar Lake gleams as an authentic haven, yet to be fully explored.

At the core of Rajasthan lies India's largest inland saltwater lake, Sambhar. Its oval expanse is nourished by five rivers: Medtha, Samaod, Mantha, Rupangarh, Khari, and Khandela.

Sambhar Lake's history is woven with ownership shifts. From Mughal governors to joint management by Jaipur and Marwar (Jodhpur) until 1949, the lake's salt revenues have shaped its narrative. Subsequently, the Rajasthan government undertook the task of salt production.

Within the heart of Sambhar resides Sambhar Salts Ltd. (SSL), a government entity orchestrating the production of 196,000 tonnes of salt annually, contributing 9% to India's total output.

Though SSL's efforts extract salt from 3% of the eastern lake through brine evaporation, unauthorized borewells overshadow this production narrative.

Late 2019 cast a grim spotlight on Sambhar Lake as migratory birds plummeted to the lakebed's barren expanse. Approximately 25,000 birds met their fate.

Diminished wetlands and burgeoning vegetation paint a grim picture. Scarce red algae, a vital bird sustenance, and the delicate equilibrium of local livelihoods hang in the balance.

Sambhar Lake's saltiness springs from its arid environs. An endorheic basin, it cradles water within, refusing its escape. Intense summer heat amplifies evaporation, leaving behind trapped salts, the hallmark of the lake's unique character.

As winter dawns, Sambhar offers an enchanting tapestry: camping, bird-watching, and clear-skied stargazing. The cosmos above adds a celestial layer to the allure of the land below.
