Traffic jams are a common phenomenon across India. When it comes to Jaipur, poor infrastructure, regular construction activities and a heavy influx of tourists, are the major causes for this. So, ensuring a congestion free city is going to be the key for the government to shift towards bicycles.
According to statistics, Jaipur is Rajasthan’s most congested city and India’s 8th most cramped city. Traffic jams are a pressing issue throughout the city, but even more in the Walled city of Jaipur. So, some of the questions that need to be asked and answered are - Why does Jaipur face these snarl like conditions, and how can it be addressed?
There are multiple reasons for the state of vehicular movement in Jaipur, especially in recent years.
1 - Road infrastructure
When it comes to road infrastructure, Jaipur is lagging behind other Tier-1 Indian cities. The width of the roads is less, especially in the walled city areas. The road designs are not appropriate in many locations. And this in turn creates bottlenecks leading to traffic jams specifically during peak hours.

2 - Vehicle influx from Delhi NCR
Since Jaipur is a popular tourist destination, there is a lot of vehicular footfall from outside Rajasthan, especially from Delhi NCR. The connectivity offered by the Delhi Jaipur Highway (through Gurgaon), is also contributing to the traffic.
3 - Metro construction work
All the construction work when it comes to the Jaipur metro is quite slow paced and this is adding up to the congestion. Besides, there is a lack of civic awareness among the public, which hampers free movement.

Hope for change: the initiatives tackling the traffic congestion in Jaipur
Jaipur’s traffic congestion is a critical issue plaguing the city and multiple proposals have been conceptualized by the central and state government to better the situation. As part of the Jaipur Smart City proposal, both area based developments and pan city proposals have been recommended.
1 - Area based proposals under the Jaipur smart cities mission
One of the major sectors as part of the Jaipur Smart City proposal, secondary to heritage and tourism is transport. Area based development proposals focus on improving road infrastructure in the walled city area including smart parking, smart signalling and smart roads equipped with CCTV, multi-modal metro stations and public bicycle sharing schemes.
2 - Pan-city proposals under the Jaipur Smart Cities Mission
The pan city proposals however majorly focus at solving Jaipur traffic congestion problem. One of the proposals as per the pan-city development is Public Rapid Transit System (PRTS), which enhances accessibility due to advanced and higher number of transport facilities, protects the environment as public transport involves lesser number of private motor vehicles on the road leading to lower Carbon emissions. Integrated transport Management System (IMTS), runs on the major objective of optimizing the use of public transport, which will therefore have a positive impact on the congestion problem. Also, as part of the pan-city proposals, variable message signages like LED Boards are to be installed, which will provide minute by minute traffic information, enabling people to take shorter and time saving routes, thus reducing traffic snarls.
3 - Cycles4Change challenge
Another national level initiative is the Cycles4Change challenge which aims to inspire Indian cities to implement cycling-friendly interventions in the wake of COVID-19 with support from citizens and assistance from experts.
Both Jaipur and Udaipur have been playing integral roles towards fulfilling this challenge and attempting to be less dependent on private vehicles.
On the whole, such a move can have a major impact on a city like Jaipur and result in reduced traffic congestion, lesser air pollution as well as carbon emissions. And, not to forget the health benefits that come with cycling.
The road ahead: jam or clear
According to the government, multiple proposals have been laid out in terms of infrastructure and other schemes on paper. And, they are expecting massive urban space transformations to take place in the near future.
Nonetheless, the participation of people on ground is indispensable to bring about a transformation.
