Dawn's First Sip

Every morning, while most of Jaipur still slumbers, a small light flickers on at a humble corner shop on Chaura Rasta Road, Bapu Bazar. This is where Sahu’s day begins - or rather, where it seamlessly continues from the night before. For over 40 years, this modest establishment has set the standard for what mornings taste like in Jaipur.
The Handcart Legacy
"Dadaji ke paas sirf ek handcart aur ek sapna tha," recalls Anil Sahu, the third-generation owner of Sahu Chai.
In 1968, Ladhu Ram set up a small tea stall under a sprawling peepal tree in the heart of Jaipur with just three brass kettles and a secret recipe that would soon become legendary. Back then, a cup of tea cost just 20 paise—today, the same iconic chai is served in a kulhad for ₹20, carrying forward a rich tradition of authentic flavors.

Three Generations of Sahu Chai
The original handcart that started it all still stands proudly in their shop, serving as a powerful reminder of humble beginnings and a testament to a journey that turned a simple cup of chai into a cherished legacy.
A Ritual for Jaipur
For anyone visiting Jaipur, a stop at Sahu Chai is almost a ritual. Early risers heading to Govind Dev Temple know that the morning isn’t complete without a steaming cup of Sahu’s famous chai - a perfect blend of tradition, taste, and timeless charm.
Expanding the Legacy
Building on this foundation, Anil Sahu and Sanjay Sahu (MBA), representing the third generation of the Sahu Chai legacy, have taken bold steps to expand the family business. They have established cafes across Jaipur, where their famous chai is now served alongside a diverse menu of over 100 delicious food items and beverages. Today, Sahu Chaiwala stands as one of Rajasthan’s leading chai franchises.

At its heart, however, Sahu Chaiwala is more than just tea—it’s about sharing warmth, tradition, and the simple joy of a cup that brings people together.
Celebrities at Sahu Chai

PM Modi and French President Macron at Sahu Chai Jaipur
The charm of Sahu Chai extends beyond the everyday tea lover. Over the years, many famous personalities have graced the shop. From Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron to Rajasthan’s former Chief Ministers Ashok Gehlot and Vasundhara Raje, countless distinguished guests have enjoyed a cup of Sahu’s famous tea. Bollywood stars like Dharmendra, Sanjay Dutt, Hema Malini, Madhuri Dixit, Danny Denzongpa, and Govinda have also stopped by, reinforcing Sahu Chai’s status as a true Jaipur institution.
The Golden Ratio
What makes Sahu's chai extraordinary is their legendary milk-to-water ratio, known as the "Sahu Suvarna Anupaat" (Golden Ratio). Their unique 70:30 milk-to-water proportion, combined with a specific boiling time of exactly 7.5 minutes, creates what locals call "dudh me dooba hua chaipatti ka jadoo" (magic of tea leaves drowned in milk).
Tea Leaves Tale
Their tea sourcing story is fascinating:
- They exclusively use leaves from a specific tea garden in Darjeeling
- The leaves are hand-picked during the second flush only
- They maintain a traditional relationship with the same tea estate for three generations
- Each batch is personally selected by the Sahu family
Revolutionizing Morning Culture
Before Sahu's came along, Jaipur's morning chai culture was largely home-based. They revolutionized it by:
- Introducing the concept of "Morning Walk Chai"
- Creating special blends for different professions (lighter for office workers, stronger for laborers)
- Starting the tradition of complimentary mathri with morning chai
- Establishing the "Subah Ki Sabha" - informal morning meetings of local influencers
The Cup Story
Their serving style is unique:
- Traditional kulhads are used only during the first three hours
- Brass cups (called "Sahu Special") for regular customers
- Glass cups for "cutting chai"
- Each type of cup has its own chai preparation method
Time-Tested Testimonials
"Meri shaadi ki baat Sahu ki chai pe hi tai hui thi," laughs Ramesh Agarwal, a 65-year-old businessman who hasn't missed his morning chai here for 35 years. The shop walls are filled with similar stories - photographs, handwritten notes, and even a few framed marriage invitations where couples credit Sahu's chai for their union.
The Morning Menu
Their menu is strategically timed:
- 4:30 AM - 6:00 AM: Special Kadak Chai (strongest brew)
- 6:00 AM - 8:00 AM: Malai Maar Chai (with cream top)
- 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM: Regular Chai
- Post 10:00 AM: Various specialties including:
- Masala Chai
- Adrak Tulsi Chai
- Elaichi Special
- Kesar Chai (weekends only)
The New Generation Touch
Sahu Chai has expanded internationally
While maintaining tradition, the younger Sahus have added subtle innovations:
- A small digital display showing brewing temperatures
- Special breakfast combo deals
Beyond Business
What makes Sahu's special isn't just their chai - it's their role in Jaipur's social fabric. From helping students with exam preparation tips to being unofficial marriage counselors, the Sahu family has played multiple roles in their customers' lives.
