Mumbai's Public Transport: World's Most Affordable
A recent study shows Mumbai has the cheapest public transport worldwide, with single tickets at $0.23 and monthly passes at $15, offering great affordability.
A recent study found that Mumbai has the cheapest public transport system in the world. Researchers from the international ticketing discount website called Picodi concluded after examining public transportation costs in 45 cities worldwide and comparing them to local average wages.
Londoners pay highest for a single ticket, Mumbai cheapest on the list
If you're a fan of exploring new cities and hopping on public transport to get around, you might want to pay attention to this study. According to the latest research, London has taken the top spot for its public transport system's most expensive single ticket price. That's right, it'll set you back a whopping $5.19 just for one ride!
But London isn't the only city with steep prices. Zurich and Stockholm come in second and third place, respectively, with single tickets costing $4.75 and $3.73. Meanwhile, Berlin and Melbourne round out the top five, with ticket prices at $3.21 and $3.17 respectively. With single tickets priced at a mere $0.23, Mumbai is the cheapest city to buy a single ticket.
Mumbai on the bottom, London on top with the most expensive monthly pass
London again tops the list when it comes to purchasing a monthly pass, with
citizens paying an average of $271, followed by Dublin ($166), and New York ($127). Mumbai's monthly passes, in contrast, only cost $15.
Mumbaikars spend a mere 2.4% of their wage on transport, comparable to Dubai, NYC
In Sao Paulo, where monthly access to all city-wide public transportation costs
14.3% of the average pay, we find the least beneficial relation between pass
prices and average monthly wages. Istanbul and London are in second and third place in terms of cost at 7.5% and 7.4% of the average wage.
Mumbai is one of the least expensive cities on this list; a monthly pass costs
Rs.1,250, or just 2.4% of the average wage in Mumbai which is comparable to
Dubai's (2.3%) and New York's (2.1%) ratios. Citizens of Berlin enjoy relatively cheap public transport as they have to shell out a mere 1% of their monthly wage for travel.
Despite being one of the cheapest in the world, Mumbai ranks as the second most expensive in India
However, the situation differed when cities and towns in India were compared. Mumbai residents must send over the most money for monthly passes. According to the report's explanation of the study's methodology, it was based on the single-ticket and monthly pass pricing provided by regional public transportation providers as of March 2023. The study's monthly passes cover unlimited use of all modes of transportation inside the municipal limits.
The most expensive single ticket among the 13 cities in the ranking is available in Ahmedabad and costs 35. The least costly single tickets, however, are available to residents of Kolkata, costing just 13. Mumbai residents must pay the highest fee for monthly passes, which is 3,570. Nagpur offers the cheapest monthly pass for 370 rupees.
