Revolutionizing Digital Payments: The Paytm Soundbox Impact

Discover how the Paytm Soundbox transformed digital payments by providing instant audio confirmations, enhancing trust for merchants and customers alike.

Revolutionizing Digital Payments: The Paytm Soundbox Impact

After making payments to our local Kirana store or hawkers, we all have heard the iconic “Paytm par das rupay prapt hue” on a speaker with the Paytm branding. This small box has revolutionised small-scale business people with tracking payments at a subscription of a mere Rs 125 per month.

The fintech company launched the device in 2019 and is provided to business owners who are referred to as “merchants” to keep a track of transactions. The soundbox gives audio confirmation by narrating the amount received by the merchant after a transaction. The confirmation can be given in any of the popular Indian languages like English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati etc as the merchant wishes.

The soundbox works on a sim card which is connected to the merchant’s mobile number and bank account. It costs Rs. 299 for purchase and a subscription fee of Rs. 125 per month.

Moreover, the Paytm soundbox is manufactured and designed by Noida-based Oakter Ltd giving a major push to Make in India.

The rising need for the box

Unified Payments Interface (UPI)  has revolutionised digital payments in India due to its simplicity, no convenience charges and linkage to one's bank account. UPI clocked in 74 billion transactions in 2022 that were valued at Rs 125 lakh crore.

With UPI and digital payments becoming increasingly popular, it has brought in new problems related to it.

Rinku, a chaat seller opposite Matunga Station in Mumbai told Cityscope, “ The Paytm soundbox has come immensely useful as it has allowed my employees and me to keep track of payments while we are overwhelmed with a large number of customers.”

“Oftentimes people say claim that they have paid, while we go to check our bank statements or SMS to confirm the transaction, they are nowhere to be found,” he revealed.

Near the Don Bosco School in Wadala, Mumbai, a kirana store owner stated that he had initially opted for the Paytm Soundbox, but he moved to the BharatPe speaker as its costs Rs 100 as compared to Rs 125 for the former.

“My soundbox got spoilt after one of my employees accidentally dropped a beverage on it. I cater to hundreds of people on a daily basis, without this box it has become significantly tougher to keep track of payments with the audio confirmation”, explains K. Pujaree, a canteen owner in a corporate office.

“I am not referring to my patrons as dishonest, but they are either glued on their phones or in a tearing hurry, thus forgetting to pay for their meals,” he added.

The growing popularity of the box and others following suit

Paytm Soundbox has been adopted by Indian businesses in an unusual way, with one business buying a new device every six seconds clocking in over 40 lakh users. The business provided this information in its Paytm 2022 Recap, which also highlighted intriguing trends in the transactions made using Paytm in the previous calendar year. In India, Paytm Soundbox is unquestionably becoming the sound of business transactions.

Other finance companies have released their own iterations of the sound box as a result of the popularity of Paytm. When BharatPe introduced its sound device, BharatPe Speaker, in June 2022, it became the first company to compete with Paytm in the market. A few months later, PhonePe used a similar strategy with its Smart Speaker product; the business has since installed 2.2 million units in India, according to a report by Rest of World.

Earlier this year, GooglePay entered the fray by testing its Soundpod sound box in kirana stores across the nation. A number of Indian banks, including IndusInd Bank and AU Small Finance Bank, have also introduced comparable products in an effort to capitalise on the sound box market's rising popularity.

Owing to the growing popularity and necessity of this device, it is until the time that the SoundBox becomes a crucial part of every consumer-to-business transaction
