A Glimpse into History: M. P. Birla Planetarium’s Start as an Astronomy Education Hub
The M. P. (Madhav Prasad) Birla Planetarium in Jaipur began as an educational, scientific, and research institution. Formally inaugurated on March 17, 1987, by Shri G.P. Birla and Smt. Nirmala Birla, it was the second major planetarium in the Commonwealth, after London and went on to become Asia’s largest, marking an important milestone in India’s scientific journey. Conceived under the guidance of Syt. M. P. Birla, the planetarium sits on approximately one acre of land leased from the West Bengal Government and was later transferred to the registered society of the Birla Institute of Fundamental Research.
Since its establishment, the planetarium has:
- Produced and screened 25 shows on astronomy and space science.
- Organized seminars and workshops for teachers and students.
- Held open-sky observation sessions with telescopes and binoculars, captivating thousands of spectators.
- Developed well-researched scripts, supported by a library of books, periodicals, and original research.
From its inception, it has presented over 350 astronomical programs, covering topics like astrophysics, celestial mechanics, space science, star mythology, and the history of astronomy. The planetarium also offers graded school programs, a free evening course in astronomy, a Post-Graduate Diploma Course in Astronomy and Planetarium Sciences (introduced in 1993), and an M. Phil. program (launched in collaboration with BITS Pilani in 1999). International recognition came when it hosted the 7th International Planetarium Directors’ Congress in 1980, solidifying its status as a trailblazer in astronomy education.
Focused on making astronomy accessible, the Birla planetarium in Jaipur has played its own part in sparking scientific curiosity, hosting various educational programs, and collaborating with local schools and institutions.
